The AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile or AMRAAM, is a modern, all weather, night and day beyond visual range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM).The AIM-120 is a fire and forget missile, meaning when launched, there is no need for the pilot to worry about the missile. When an AMRAAM missile is launched, NATO pilots use the brevity code - Fox Three.

AIM-7 Sparrow - Beyond Visual Range Missile (BVRM) Developments[]
The AIM-7 Sparrow was the United States' first operational BVR missile, purchased from original owner, Howard Hughes, by the U.S. Navy. It had around an effective range of 12 km, using semi-active radar guidance. The AIM-7 Sparrow was intended for slow, large bombers and redered effectiviness with fighters low. Due to this, the Sparrow was constanly improved. The Sparrow proved the effectiveness of BVR missiles and paved the way for more advanced missiles such as the AIM-120 AMRAAM
